While a hurricane hit in Puerto Rico, a biologist, by the name of Tom White, stayed in a safe room. The safe room, located in Iguaca Aviary, is an enclosed bird habitat. When the hurricane was over, Tom White had left the safe room and noticed that when he had left the room , it turned out that it was really quiet and the only sound  you could hear was the sound of the wind. There were no birds chirping or singing, however the only sound was coming from the wind.  When Tom White noticed this, he was really concerned. The reason being was because Tom has been working on a parrot recovery program for over 18 years and is severely concerned only because parrots in Puerto Rico  are going extinct, and not hearing any birds after the storm, was really agitating . After every hurricane, there were  even more birds missing. Some examples of storms that are making birds mysteriously disappear include  Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria. The population of the Puerto Rican parrot  has gone down over the years. In 1973, there were about only 13 parrot’s left which had made many people concerned for birds. Although, since present day today,  there has been many people trying to get the bird’s population up.  There are about 500 birds in Puerto Rico and although the population of the birds is going up slowly, these birds have to be held captive because with every storm there is, the birds will just keep disappearing.
