In Gangi, Sicily there is an offer that is almost impossible to pass up. The offer is that you can purchase a house for exactly, one euro so it is basically giving away the houses. Although this may seem like a great offer there actually is a catch, which is that you have to fix it yourself. Since the houses are located on a mountain they are in need of a repair. Also, anyone who purchases the homes has only four years to repair it. This offer has already lured dozens of people around the world. The reason for doing all of this is so that it can create a revival for the city so it can bring new and fresh opportunities for tradesmen and attract tourists. The mentality of the Sicilians had a great impact on why nobody lived in this city and that was because it was considered too far away from the sea.

The city Gangi in the 1950โ€™s had a population of about 16,000 today there are about 7,000. The many periodic waves of emigration began in the city throughout the end of the 19th century. This was caused because of the Madonie Mountains that caused the people to struggle economically. People left to travel to America where they sought out to have a better life. The Ellis Island records state that about 1,700 Gangi residents arrived in New York but soon after Argentina became the preferred destination.

The owners of the houses get to decide if they are going to be sold or if they want to be given away. More than 100 homes have been given away or sold. There is a waiting list with a number of 200 houses available which means that the City Hall can be more picky with the residents they choose to get the houses. Mr.Ferrarello, mayor of Gangi, stated,” We did this for our children because we love our territory. And we want our children to stay.”
