Giraffes the tallest land animals are at risk of extinction.

The giraffe population has shrunk 40 percent in the just 30 years. Because of this, scientist decided to put them on the official watch list of threatened and endangered species worldwide. Vulnerable, is the word to describe the current state of a giraffe.  In 1985, there were between 151,000 and 163,000 giraffes where it was previously an animal of less concern.  Although, in 2015 that number has dropped to 97,562, according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The giraffe is the only mammal whose status changed on the list this year.  The reason- habitat loss.  While everyone worries about elephants, Earth has four times as many of them as giraffes.   A “Silent Extinction” is what is happening to giraffes.  Everyone assumes giraffes are everywhere, but they are not.  “Until recently, biologists hadn’t done a good job assessing giraffes’ numbers and where they can be found. The giraffes have been lumped into one broad species instead of nine separate subspecies,” Fennessy a biologist said.

Shrinking living spaces has exacerbated due to poaching and disease.  Also, more and more people are moving into giraffe areas.  Giraffe numbers are plunging most in central and eastern Africa. They are being offset by increases in southern Africa.  Giraffes are in the vulnerable column which is a step down from extinction.  Soon we are not going to be asking ourselves, “What can we do?” but “Giraffes’ who?”
